As I write this, I am sitting outside enjoying a view of the gorgeous lake. The smell o f fresh air and the sounds of nearby birds and critters fill my senses.
Today is the Fourth of July.
I have been contemplating this holiday for the past week. What does it really mean? What are we really celebrating?
I am realizing that the more I learn and grow, the more questions I have. This learning and growing is accompanied by a strong desire for knowledge and understanding.
Over the last week, I have come across people excited to celebrate the Fourth of July. Some of them were excited about the connection with family and friends. Some were looking forward to all the beverages they would consume. Many of the conversations were focused on the excitement about celebrating because we are ‘better’ than everyone else.
This is one of the main reasons I started contemplating this holiday and the celebration that goes along with it. Over the past year, I have spent significant time and energy stepping into who I am meant to become. Through my growth, I have really embraced and expanded my feeling of community for ALL people. This expansion has asked me to re-visit all of my previous beliefs and understandings.
Do I believe we are better? Absolutely not. Do I believe that we have a lot of incredible opportunities in the USA? Absolutely. Do I also believe that there are amazing people and amazing opportunities in other countries? Absolutely.
As I move through this holiday I will continue searching.
What does this holiday really mean? What are we really celebrating?
